Instructor Information

Tania Johnson
Tania was born in South Africa, where she received an Honours degree in psychology. She spent several years teaching in Taiwan before adventuring to places like Mount Everest base camp and the Andes in Peru and Bolivia. She then completed a one-year internship at Cancer Treatment Centres of America in Chicago, where her focus was on supporting patients in the stem cell unit. Tania then earned her Master’s degree in counselling from City University of Seattle. She and her husband were foster parents to four First Nations children for five years and have two bio children of their own.

Description

Does your child struggle with big feelings, do they experience sensory issues, do they take a long time to get over failures, do they take things personally, are they deeply impacted by world events or the emotions of others around them?

Are they also deeply creative, wise beyond their years, have an extensive vocabulary, empathetic, highly conscientious and perceptive?

If so- you may have a Highly Sensitive Child. About 30% of children are born with a Highly Sensitive nervous system. These children feel their world deeply. They often have bigger emotional responses ( both positive and negative) to their world, and they are also often aware of other peoples emotions. They are often easily overwhelmed by noise, lights, and chaotic environments. These children are also at a high risk for mental health concerns in environments that are not positive or nurturing.

On the other hand, this depth of experience means that these children, when nurtured in positive environments, tend to flourish. These are the children who became our artists, our writers, our change-makers in the world. Often small shifts in the environment and in caregiving styles makes the world of difference.

In this workshop, Tania Johnson, leads you through how to identify if your child is highly sensitive, the neurobiology of sensitivity, how to nurture sensitive children, how to help them through challenging moments, how to work with your own sensitivity threshold when parenting/working with a Highly Sensitive Child and how to advocate for them at school.
